What is inside that box? - SGI hinv

The SGI hinv command is essential for any SGI / IRIX collector as it provide the hardware inventory of your machine. This is essential to understanding what you have just purchased or are about to purchase on eBay :-)

In splitting out my SGI  / IRIX blog I thought it simplest to keep these seperate. This is just machines I have either owned or own. But my SGI collection is pretty limited as I only use and keep: Octane, O350 and Fuel machines.

Majority of these are Chimera based. As is Tezro which I have since cannalbilised and parted out...


HINVs

hinv -mv (hardware inventory) is the start of understanding what your SGI machine is and what's inside it. Here are a couple of samples, starting with Tezro the last "Desktop" IRIX / MIPS SGI.

This type of data is simillar, but much easier to decipher than that you get from an x86_64 IPMI (BMC) interface.

To my mind the Octane was the best designed SGI desktop. Highly modular with great graphics and a nice case design. The Jony Ive Mac of its time. This is a fully loaded one with: dual CPUs, V12 graphics, Digital Video, Fibre Channel IF, Firewire and 1GbE:

Fuel - A Cut Down Chimera Architecture Desktop

The Fuel is a great case of what could have been. It has snappier UI performance than Octane (2 x 600 MHZ) owing to faster disk sub-system, had built-in USB but only allowed 4 GB RAM. So it sits in halfway house between Octane2 & Tezro. This machine proves to grow on you with use though. I have now updated this hinv again..  having just updated PIMM to 800 MHz (see my Chimera post for information on flashing machine to support faster PIMM) after previously adding: Revolution 7.1 sound card, 1 GbE, LSI SAS3442X SAS/SATA HBA & DM10 FireWire boards:

If you have one of these lying around working then you need to consider contacting a historical computer museum. In its day this was considered a "super computer". Now it is out-classed by a single 2RU Dual CPU high core count Intel based server and as you can see from picture it takes up signficantly more space.

Onyx 350 with InfiniteReality4

SGI Onyx 350 - Graphics Super Computer

This is the same machine as the one for "Origin / Onyx O350, Numalink'ed, V12 & DMedia DM3 etc" hinv above. The difference is that it is now connected to G Brick with InfiniteReality4 graphics and is booted from alternate hard disk that is setup for IR graphics.
